The Art and Science Of Great Skin

True beauty radiates from within. External beauty is detected, from the outside, with a critical eye and should ideally reflect your inner beauty.

Just as an ageless portrait or fine piece of art is not created over night and neither is fantastic looking skin. When we were young, all we had to do was jump out of a hot shower and our skin glowed.

As we age, our skin cells do not exfoliate as they once did and require special assistance. Years of “fun in the sun” create texture changes and irregular pigmentation that is certainly not desirable on one’s skin.

An artist uses a multidisciplinary approach with many modalities. He can paint with oils or watercolors, sculpt with clay or chisel marble. Dr. Ress similarly uses all the tools and techniques at his disposal to create an individual SkinPlan™ for you.

Since great looking skin does actually start from within, skin health must be achieved from below the surface and then incorporate all layers of the skin. This can be accomplished by using custom selected skin products for each skin type and combination. Dr. Ress will address fine lines, superficial wrinkles, pigmentation problems, acne, post acne scars, enlarged pores and texture irregularities.

One program of skin rejuvenation with Retin-A helps exfoliation and has scientifically been proven to increase blood flow in the skin. As with everything good in life, it comes with a price. The skin can become dry, irritated and red at first. This is counteracted with superb moisturization and anti-inflammatory cream.

In fact, patients initially hate the look of their skin, progress to liking it and then ultimately love it. The nice thing about this system is the severity of reaction can be truly customized or adjusted to ones individual tolerance.

Ultimately a SkinPlan™ will address moisture, pigment, pores, lines and sun with products, treatments (Botox®, Restylane®), peels and much more specifically designed with you in mind

BOTOX® injections

Thermage®

Today’s consumers have a host of minimally invasive anti-aging techniques to consider, from non-ablative light therapy and laser resurfacing to Botox®, wrinkle fillers and chemical peels. In the past, when patients wanted to tighten and “lift” lax or redundant skin, invasive surgery was the only option. Now, the Thermage procedure offers the option of “no downtime” skin rejuvenation - a less costly, non-invasive method for tightening tissue and generating completely new collagen deep beneath the skin’s surface. Thermage has been featured in print and television media nationwide, including The Oprah Winfrey Show.  On a segment about anti-aging with guest Dr. Irwin, Thermage was deemed  "The biggest breakthrough in skin technology since lasers."

Thermage treatments can help tighten skin on the face, neck, arms, stomach and legs. Ideal candidates have slight skin laxity, not significantly loose skin or wrinkles.

What is Thermage
The Thermage® treatment is performed with a sophisticated device unlike any other instrument used in aesthetic practices. Radiofrequency (RF) energy – which has been a traditional tool in surgical medicine – has been refined and enhanced for the application of tightening tissue. The heat energy tightens existing collagen and promotes growth of new collagen fibers deep in the dermis. Instead of the temporary results achieved by superficial treatments of the skin’s surface, tissue tightening offers longer-lasting structural benefits.

The Thermage® system uses a special form of radio waves to deliver heat to tighten and remodel the deep structures beneath your skin. It simultaneously protects the skin surface from heat damage by using a protective cooling before, during, and after tissue heating.

The Thermage® treatment tip uses tiny thermometers to measure skin surface temperature during the entire procedure. I prefer to prescribe some sedation prior to the procedure. The procedure takes about one hour and patients can resume their normal activities the next day. The effects of treatment appear gradually over 2 to 6 months as the new collagen enhances facial contours.

There are great benefits to the Thermage procedure. They include:

  • The Thermage procedure usually requires only 1 session, is a “scarless” technique, and allows a prompt return to regular activities.
  • Patients of all skin types and colors can have the procedure, as it does not affect skin pigment like lasers or other resurfacing procedures.
  • Thermage is complementary to certain common cosmetic procedures such as Botox®, Face and Neck lifts, and even Liposuction.
  • Post-treatment down time is minimal, generally no more than one or two days.
  • Compared to incisional surgery, risks are dramatically reduced.

The slowing of skin-cell turnover associated with aging, genetics and chronic sun exposure causes the skin to wear and tear. Fine lines give way to crow’s feet, which turn into wrinkles. This often occurs right along with droopy lids and dark bags. The Thermage procedure naturally smoothes periorbital wrinkles and generally opens the eye area, creating a natural, refreshed and youthful appearance.

The Thermage Procedure
Thermage is performed in the office without anesthesia. Some patients are prescribed pain medication or a small amount of Valium in order to allay anxiety. The whole procedure takes about one hour and the patient will experience little discomfort during Thermage and need only one or two pain pills afterwards

Healing and Recovery
Elevation and ice are recommended for one or two days. Sunblock should always be used (by everyone). Normal activities are resumed the next day.

Cost of Thermage®.
At the time of your initial consultation you will be quoted a price of Dr. Ress’ fee as well as the fee for the Thermage® machine, which uses disposable treatment tips. When additional tips are needed, you will be charged for the equipment used. Fees are due in full at least two weeks prior to surgery and a security deposit will reserve a specific time and date for your surgery
