Introduction The Ear Lobe Repair Procedure Recovery and healing Cost of surgery
Introduction
Miracle Makeovers dramatically change one’s look but sometimes the most simple change can make the biggest impact. Your ears are not only one of the most visible parts of your body but also very fashionable and make a major statement by how they look and what jewelry you wear.
How many women do you know that have pulled down long earlobes or tears in their ears? Many women and men suffer from this problem as they wear jewelry to enhance their appearance. This may be due to the fact that they may wear earrings that are too heavy, hang low, or due to the pressure of their ear pressed against the telephone.
This is not just a problem exclusive to older women. I recently saw a thirty-year old patient mother of two whose ears were pierced too low and had nearly completely pulled through. Over a period of time your hole will gradually enlarge. The final tear is usually through a small piece of tissue at the bottom of your ear lobe creating what is called a cleft. These tears are often split and are very visible and may be hard to cover with your hair. You may ask if there is something that can be done to repair your stretched or torn ear. The answer is yes.
The Ear Lobe Repair Procedure
There are several different types of repairs that can be done all in the office under local anesthesia usually within an hour. The degree of your tear will determine the type of procedure you will need. There is minimal discomfort after earlobe repair and you will not need to have any prescription medicine other than antibiotic after your surgery.
Technically, flaps are used to redistribute and reshape your ear. These flaps will help minimize any scar. New stud earrings are placed immediately during the surgery and will initially stay in place for three weeks. The stitches I use are clear and will not be visible.
Recovery and healing.
There is no downtime. Restrictions are no swimming and wearing only small stud earrings for six weeks. There is little to no pain afterwards. You will experience some sensitivity after surgery but after a few days it will go away. Stitches are removed in ten to 14 days.
The most asked question when considering this type of surgery is when can I wear my formal diamond earrings? With the procedure I do you no longer have to wait several weeks to get your ears re-pierced. I can re-pierce them in my office the day of surgery. For proper healing I recommend that you keep the new studs in for two months before getting out those beautiful diamond earrings you got at Christmas. Therefore I do not suggest you wearing heavy jewelry during that time.
To prevent tears in the future, you should wear lightweight or stud earrings as much as possible. I work with a number of area jewelers who know which earrings are the best. There is a wide variety of elegant jewelry that can be worn during and after the healing period. Secondly, you should always ask your jeweler to adjust the tension on your earrings. Finally, avoid pulling on earrings and remember to take earrings out around young children. They tend to pull on shiny objects.
Cost of surgery.
At the time of your initial consultation you will be quoted a price of Dr. Ress’ fee. Although the cost is not covered by any insurance plan since it is considered cosmetic surgery the fee generally runs under one thousand dollars. Fees are due in full at least two weeks prior to surgery and a security deposit will reserve a specific time and date for your surgery.
