Introduction

Heaviness of the eyebrows can result in the abnormal position of the eyebrows at or below the bony ridge of the upper eye. Patients frequently assume that eyelid surgery will correct this when in fact what is needed is a Brow lifting procedure. Brow rejuvenation restores a more youthful, refreshed look to your brow and improves the horizontal lines and furrows that can make you appear angry, sad, or tired.

Dr. Ress will design your brow by raising or reshaping based on your facial analysis to give a natural rested appearance, not a look of surprise. Brow lift patients are some of the most happy with their results as the results can be quite dramatic.

While the information provided below will provide you basic information regarding the procedure, it cannot answer all of your questions. Every person is an individual, unique in appearance, and Dr. Ress recommends a personal consultation in order to answer all your questions regarding facial rejuvenation.

Newer techniques allow brow lift even in men with receding hairlines.

What is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift elevates the forehead repositioning the eyebrow areas to a better location relative to the bony ridge above the eyes, which is known as the orbital rim. In women, an artfully created arch for the eyebrow is designed above the ridge, whereas in men, the shape of the eyebrow remains fairly flat but above the ridge.

Upper Eyelid surgery to remove excess upper eyelid skin is usually recommended at the same time [link to eyelid page]

The Facial evaluation.

Dr. Ress will spend time with you to discuss your areas of concern and to make recommendations for how to maximally improve your appearance and to achieve your goals. These treatments may range from non-surgical options to facial surgical procedures that maximally restore youth.

Part of the evaluation will review your health history, current medications, use of vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco and drugs. The best candidates for surgery are healthy individuals who, if they have any medical conditions, have them well managed and well controlled; non-smokers; and individuals who have a positive outlook and specific and realistic goals in mind.

Part of the evaluation involves accurately identifying and quantifying typical problem areas including skin type, amount of sun damage, skin excess, brow and eyelid position, presences of wrinkles and jowls, etc.

If you have been considering cosmetic surgery, contact Dr. Ress to set up an appointment for a consultation.

The Brow Lift procedure.

Dr. Ress primarily uses a minimally invasive surgery for the browlift using an endoscope. The endoscope is a long, thin tube with a light on the end, attached to a video camera. The endoscope is inserted through small incisions in the scalp and allows Dr. Ress to clearly see and work on the various internal structures of the forehead. Newer methods of ‘fixation’ prevent settling of the brow for many years to come. The endoscopic procedure also has a lower risk of experiencing numbness after surgery than the older open techniques described below.

An older more traditional approach, the so-called "open" technique. This open procedure involves making an incision across the top of the scalp, beginning above the ears and hidden within the hair. The incision may be placed at the front of the hairline or, in some cases, toward the middle of the scalp. In men, the browlift can sometimes be performed with an incision right above the eyebrow.

The procedure itself is done in a certified operating room either in an outpatient center or at the hospital, where you can stay overnight afterwards and receive personalized nursing care. The procedure itself takes approximately 2 hours to perform, or 3 hours if upper eyelid surgery is performed as well.

Recovery and healing.

After surgery, you will notice a small plastic tube in place that removes fluid from the surgical area and helps reduce swelling more quickly. You will experience surprisingly little discomfort afterwards. Swelling is ameliorated with ice packs. Stitches or clips are removed around one week after surgery.

Healing continues for several weeks as swelling resolves. Any numbness resolves over 6 weeks or so. Some bruising may be expected on the forehead or cheeks and resolves spontaneously over several weeks’ time.

Cost of surgery.

At the time of your initial consultation you will be quoted a price of Dr. Ress’ fee as well as the fee for the hospital, anesthesiologist and the direct cost of the implants themselves. Fees are due in full at least two weeks prior to surgery and a security deposit will reserve a specific time and date for your surgery.
